Naresh as we knew him, was a quiet introvert who surprised everyone through his physical fitness combined with a sharp mind. He was in Himalaya house from 1956 to 1965.
I remember him as a slim, smart boy, a striking resemblance with Mr Jagdish Ram our House Master and PT instructor. A good gymnast and boxer, he graduated from school as a 1st divisioner to join the NDA.
Keen to join the Engineers, he was however, commissioned into my Late Father's battalion, the First Battalion of the JAT Regiment in July 1970, considering his physical attributes and ability to play troop games. The Battalion also known as the Royal Jats converted to Mechanised Infantry and was redesignayed as 2 Mech. He had to his credit various courses, staff appointments and a stint with the Special Forces.
Last posted at Yol Camp and settled in the ancestral village in Kangra Valley where he passed away due to cardiac issues. Naresh is survived by his wife Rita and two sons, one commissioned in 3 Mech and the second working with an MNC.
He will be greatly missed in the regiment and by his classmates.
Our prayers for peace to the departed soul and strength to the family for bearing this loss.
