Extremely saddened to share the news of the sad demise of Col Rapinder "Ross" Singh Chahal on 21 Aug.
He was a 3rd generation soldier from the same village in Ludhiana as Maj Bhupinder Singh, MVC of Hodson's Horse.
His father, a WW2 veteran from Royal Bengal Sappers and Miners sent him to The Lawrence School, Sanawar for his schooling. He did his BA(Hons) from Govt College, Ldh.
He was in Alamein coy in IMA and was commissioned into 13 RAJRIF in Dec 1978 & was later 2IC 7 RAJRIF. He served in Sikkim HAA, Thar, J&K, and Punjab CI. He was G3 of an mtn bde and G2 & G1 of 15xxx in the mid-90s.He was a regimental soldier and remained attached to The Rajputana Rifles till the very end.
He was a sportsman and loved Hockey the most. He loved driving and changed 3 bikes and 4 cars and was planning on a 5th. He was a tech enthusiast and shifted to changing tech very quickly.
He was suffering from an on and off fever for a few weeks which was diagnosed by local doctors as viral. When things deteriorated, he was taken to Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana where he was diagnosed with an infection of the Liver & kidney and he remained in the ICU for 8 days. The family consulted a lot of doctors who advised current treatment on the right lines. As a last-ditch measure, the family tried a live liver transplant, but he expired before it could be attempted.
He was 64 and is survived by his wife and two sons. The elder is a serving officer and the younger is an engineer in the US.
The Antim Ardas and Bhog is planned at his ancestral village Harnampura, Ludhiana on the 31st Aug at 1300 hrs.
