Rashmi Bhabhi was not only my brother’s wife, but in some ways, a gentler and humorous version of our mother to me.
I first met my sister-in-law when she was a teacher at DPS, Ghaziabad. My earliest memory is of her surrounded by an assortment of dogs and pups around and top of her. I took to her instantly and that image stays to this day.
After she married my brother and moved to Sanawar, we became friends in our own right, and I found it easier to let her break news of my infractions to the family without the risk of being disowned.
Over the years, I’ve run into numerous Old Sanawarians who were taught by her and claimed to have enjoyed her classes the most – English at that. I suppose that came from not taking herself too seriously or having ample opportunities to be tested by a bunch Haryanvi’s. It’s with that tranquility and resiliency that I saw her stoically battle and defeat cancer without complaint or a “why me?” attitude.
Just as she’d settled into her beautiful home in the hills, with magical sunrises & sunsets, wind chimes, plants & forever-present dogs, the Angels came. As my brother drove her in a last desperate effort for help, she slept gently in his lap and slipped into those hallowed environs, smile on her face and in the company of a man she so deeply cared for. No fuss, no drama, on a solitary road in the hills on a crisp Diwali dawn.
I will miss you and your calm influence immensely, my sister. The wind chimes don’t sound the same and the pugs lie quietly in their corner. I wish I had more time to say goodbye, with so much more to say, but I suppose HIS need was greater than mine.
Praveen, Vini, and your entire family are fortunate to have your grace and wisdom, guiding us from above.
Rest in Peace, Rashmi Bhabhi. ~
